Job Description and Opportunity

CFR is looking for one or more experienced professional(s) to help develop a Distributed Generation (DG) focus area within the company that will support the company’s growing commercial onsite solar and other DG work for clients. To be clear, CFR does not design, develop or install projects itself but rather helps develop strategies to incorporate onsite and offsite renewables, then helps clients procure and manage or monitor any resulting projects. For onsite projects (including but not limited to rooftop, carport and groundmount solar) specifically, CFR oversees for its clients the design, procurement and installation process. This position is part of the Client Solutions team at the company and thus is also integrated into our broader client service process. The expectations for Client Solutions team members is discussed below after discussion of the specific requirements and expectations for the Distributed Generation Project Associate/Manager/Director position (title is dependent on candidate experience level and capability).

Required Capabilities/Experience:

  • Knowledge of the entire development process for onsite solar projects
  • Knowledge of project costing and budgeting
  • Strong capabilities in development of onsite solar portfolio programs, including strategy development, planning, scheduling, implementation
  • Experience building or maintaining a cost model reflecting hardware, construction and other soft costs
  • Knowledge and experience with solar photovoltaics and solar thermal technologies, applications and vendors
  • Ability to differentiate between behind-the-meter and grid-tied applications and the tradeoffs and processes required
  • Experience and ability to identify, vet and manage developers (for projects owned by third parties) as well as contractors and subcontractors (for projects owned by clients)
  • Experience developing preliminary project designs (engineering background helpful but not required)
  • Experience working with large corporations and institutions for site data collection, interfacing with and managing multiple internal stakeholders program management, and shepherding contract approvals
  • Experience preparing bid specification and packages (RFPs, RFQs, RFIs, etc.)
  • Knowledge and experience with industry safety standards and legal requirements
  • Knowledge and experience with insurance, building/fire code and other construction requirements and standards (national, state and locality)
  • Experience with the contracts required to implement these onsite solar projects (PPA, turn-key and lease)
  • Strong working knowledge of and experience using MS Project (or comparable software) for complex project management
  • Experience and capability to conduct business development activities as needed and interact with clients as the Company’s primary day-to-day contact
  • Excellent organizational skills, strong attention to detail, and ability to provide frequent progress reports to clients and management
  • Excellent data management and record keeping capability
  • Experience troubleshooting program management issues, vendor relationships and project installations
  • Awareness of new and emerging technologies and the potential applications

Minimum requirements:

  • Solar project management including DG projects of commercial scale (~50 kW up to multi-MW) with the following experience levels for different positions: 2+ years for Associate; 4+ years for Manager; 7+ years for Director
  • Experience managing multiple complex projects concurrently
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Project and MS Office suite (Word, Powerpoint, Excel)
  • Strong working knowledge of solar design applications (Aurora, Helioscope, etc.)
  • Experience with and understanding of financial models
  • Ability to travel nationally (averaging roughly 25-33% travel)
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • US Citizen, Green Card or Permanent Resident Alien


  • Experience managing a project portfolio for a single client involving at least ten concurrent projects
  • Knowledge of Community Solar, Net Metering and Virtual Net Metering programs in the various states
  • Experience with solar thermal applications from contracting to installations and ongoing O&M
  • One or more professional licenses or certifications (e.g., NABCEP PV, CSL)
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Sketchup or other similar software
  • Knowledge of how distributed generation projects are financed
  • Knowledge and experience with of electricity storage technologies, applications, costs and design issues
  • Knowledge of thermal storage a plus

    • Research and initiate process improvement and new product/service development projects
  • General/Finance
    • Build detailed Excel models involving complex computation and technical analysis
    • Participate in an innovative renewable energy start-up that CFR is currently incubating
    • Develop pro forma customer energy usage and cost forecasting
    • Conduct economic analysis and modeling
    • Conduct economic analysis and modeling

Desired Qualifications and Skills

  • Passion for sustainability, the energy industry, and large-scale renewables
  • Bachelor’s degree with excellent grades from a challenging undergraduate program
  • Comfort completing complex quantitative and qualitative analyses, while maintaining a consistent attention to detail and a focus on creating client-ready deliverables
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to interact with those from entry level to C-suite
  • Strong sense of ownership/self-motivation
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team in an unstructured and flexible environment
  • “Buttoned up” and organized with an ability to deliver on tight deadlines in an agile, growth-focused environment
  • Evidence of creative problem-solving skills across a range of topics
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word

  • Prior experience in one or more of the following is also a plus:
    • Renewables, cleantech, or energy industries
    • Consulting, investment banking, PE/VC, project finance, economics, or engineering
