CFR’s Dennis McGinn was a panelist at VerdeXchange on Jan. 30, 2018

CFR was thrilled to participate in the VerdeXchange conference earlier this week. Special thanks to David Abel and his team for hosting such an inspiring event, and for helping us share our distinctive value with this extraordinary group of industry leaders and innovators.

CFR Board Member and former Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Navy, Admiral Dennis McGinn joined CPUC Commissioner Carla Peterman, SVP of Kilroy Realty Corp Sara Neff, Black Bear Energy CEO Drew Torbin, and 8minuteenergy CEO Martin Hermann in a thought-provoking discussion on the potential for utility-scale solar to pair with storage to help alleviate peak demand challenges. The panel also addressed how to accelerate adoption with creative finance models to increase resiliency on the grid.

Admiral McGinn also gave remarks at evening receptions at the Japanese and Canadian consulates. CFR’s Robert Griffin moderated a panel focusing on the vulnerabilities associated with an aging electric grid, and what military-installed microgrids can teach businesses and municipalities looking to ensure their resiliency in a highly interconnected modern world. The panel featured Secretary McGinn, U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Yancy Lindsey, California Energy Commission Chair Robert Weisenmiller, CEO of Advanced Microgrid Solutions Susan Kennedy, and PDE Total Energy Solutions VP Dan Cohee.

Panel: Maturing Solar + Storage Financing Strategies to Replace Peaker Plants 
The World Bank is today planning to incorporate storage into its utility-scale solar program, Scaling Solar. The program will assist regions throughout the world that suffer from grid capacity constraints during periods of peak energy demand. Here in California, state leaders are investing in research on the optimization of solar + storage technologies. Will 2018 continue the trend of seeing utility-scale solar + storage present as viable solutions to peak energy demand challenges? How can financing models leverage existing solar programs to deploy critical energy storage that can make the grid more resilient?

Panel: 21st Century Resiliency: Microgrids, the DOD, and California 
2017 once again proved the disastrous consequences of an outdated electrical grid that left hundreds of thousands in Puerto Rico, Texas, and Florida vulnerable. In addition to protecting from natural disasters, the highly digital modern world also demands a grid that is more reliable and capable of providing high-quality power to major facilities like hospitals or data centers—where even brief brownouts can cost money or even lives. Microgrids provide built-in resiliency for energy systems during times of crisis—something that the Department of Defense has already learned. What lessons can businesses and municipalities learn from military-installed microgrids? This panel will highlight regional projects that are providing resilient clean energy even in this current political climate.
